Or "The City of Tricolour". A people-friendly sized city , a modern working townProvince: the great river Po, the "little capitals" a view of the horizon , the castles and fortresses in the mountains from time of Mathilde's rule.
On display are documents, objects and relics concerning the history of the national flag, its origin and further developments until the Napoleonic period. Together with the museum materials are also multimedia instruments that make it easier to have detailed information on the Tricolour Flag proclaimed in Reggio Emilia on January 7, 1797.
The majestic theatre complex, surrounded by the public gardens, characterizes the town centre. The complex was built between 1852 and 1857 according to a design by Modena architect Cesare Costa (1801-1876). It is situated in the town area once occupied by the ancient fortress and covers an area of 3,890 square metres. The theatre has been repeatedly restored without changes in its original structure. Recently dedicated to Reggio Emilia actor Romolo Valli, it hosts a prestigious opera and concert season, as well as a rich programme of ballet. It contains a library, an archive room and a historical record library, all open to the public.
A peculiarity of the Basilica is the extraordinary series of frescoes and altar pieces executed by the best artists of 17th century Emilia: Ludovico Carracci, Gianfrancesco Barbieri (Il Guercino), Lionello Spada, Alessandro Tiarini, Carlo Bononi and Luca Ferrari.
You can see that there is a tradition of good, simple and wholesome food in the Reggio Emilia area given the many restaurants and trattorias serving eat excellent food whose recipes have been passed down from one generation to the next.
Parmigiano Reggiano cheese is well known and distributed throughout Italy and abroad, and is another local product that is found in the famous culinary manuals of the past, commended for its particular properties. According to tradition, the round of cheese must be cut using a special small olive-shaped knife that breaks the blocks up into irregular pieces as this emphasizes its qualities, like its course and granular surface.
Balsamic vinegar, a precious element that is prominent in the local food at Reggio, once enriched the dowries of the young brides from noble families. In the past it was put into bottles for use as medication but its aroma, perfume and sweet yet sour flavour convinced connoisseurs that it was a choice ingredient for use in the kitchen.
